- You wear a seatbelt in a car. It’s the law. (Verpflichtung durch Gesetz)

- You come to the party if you don’t want to. It’s up to you. (keine Verpflichtung)

- It rain later — the sky looks very dark. (Möglichkeit)
→ It might / may / could rain later — the sky looks very dark. (Möglichkeit → might / may / could)
- You park here. It is strictly forbidden. (Verbot)
→ You mustn’t park here. It is strictly forbidden. (Verbot → mustn’t)
- I swim when I was five years old. (vergangene Fähigkeit)
→ I could swim when I was five years old. (vergangene Fähigkeit → could)
- She looks exhausted. She be very tired after that long journey. (sichere Schlussfolgerung)
→ She must be very tired after that long journey. (sichere Schlussfolgerung → must)
- You eat in the library. It’s not allowed. (Verbot)
→ You mustn’t / can’t eat in the library. It’s not allowed. (Verbot → mustn’t / can’t)
- He see a doctor — that cough sounds serious. (Empfehlung)
→ He should see a doctor — that cough sounds serious. (Empfehlung → should)
- I open the window? It’s very warm in here. (höfliche Bitte um Erlaubnis)
