Setze das Verb in Klammern in der richtigen Form ein. Entscheide genau, ob Simple Past oder Past Progressive passt. Achte auf Zeitebenen, parallele Handlungen und unterbrochene Vorgänge.

  3. The police the case for several months. (investigate)
    → The police investigated the case for several months. (abgeschlossene Handlung mit Zeitdauer → Simple Past)
  4. A strange man outside the house when she arrived. (stand)
    → A strange man was standing outside the house when she arrived. (laufender Hintergrundvorgang zum Zeitpunkt der Ankunft → Past Progressive)
  5. They the news at all. (not: expect)
    → They didn’t expect the news at all. (abgeschlossene Reaktion, kein andauernder Vorgang → Simple Past)
  6. She out of the window and that it was snowing. (look / notice)
    → She looked out of the window and noticed that it was snowing. (zwei aufeinanderfolgende abgeschlossene Handlungen → Simple Past)
  7. The dog loudly — something must have scared it. (bark)
    → The dog was barking loudly — something must have scared it. (andauernder Vorgang zu einem Zeitpunkt in der Vergangenheit → Past Progressive)
  8. He to call her all evening but she didn’t answer. (try)
    → He was trying to call her all evening but she didn’t answer. (anhaltender Versuch über einen Zeitraum → Past Progressive)
  9. The storm several houses in the area. (damage)
    → The storm damaged several houses in the area. (abgeschlossenes Ergebnis → Simple Past)
  10. She attention and the turning. (not: pay / miss)
    → She wasn’t paying attention and missed the turning. (wasn’t paying: andauernder Hintergrundvorgang → Past Progressive; missed: abgeschlossene Folge → Simple Past)
  11. At that moment, nobody what was going to happen. (know)
    → At that moment, nobody knew what was going to happen. (know = Stativ-Verb, beschreibt einen Zustand zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt → Simple Past)
  12. He when his boss called. (just: leave)
    → He was just leaving when his boss called. (Handlung war gerade im Gange, als etwas anderes passierte → Past Progressive)
